Experian Reporting Rent Data on Credit Reports

Posted by Samantha Martinez on July 1st, 2011

Experian has announced that starting this year, it will be reporting “positive” rental data from its RentBureau® division into the traditional credit files. Starting in 2012, Experian will start reporting negative rental payment information.

Experian claims this will help the 50 million underbanked consumers, such as college students and recent immigrants, to build credit with on-time rental payments. What it will mostly do is lower renters’ credit scores if, as frequently happens, they are late on a rental payment. The ding on their credit will follow them around for seven years. There really should be some restrictions on reporting someone who is, say, 7 days late on a rental payment.

Prepaid credit cards and their benefits

Posted by Samantha Martinez on June 24th, 2011

What is a prepaid debit card? It is somewhat similar to the usual credit card, the difference being that it has a lower credit limit compared to the usual credit card, and this credit limit depends on the security amount which the account holder deposits to use this card. The prepaid credit card is also termed as secured credit card.

The benefit of these prepaid credit cards over the usual ones is that the user will never go into debt as the card has limits to the purchasing power. No late fees or interest charges are chargeable because of the security deposit; the same way it is for debit cards. One can make reservations for hotel rooms and give their car rental fee and shun the opportunity of interest charges.

The Center for Responsive Politics identified 156 groups engaged in such lobbying after the Dodd- Frank Act creating the Bureau was passed while the Chamber of Commerce still has a dozen lobbyists working solely on Bureau matters.
